Shattered Strength

"This piece has a memorable significance for me. It was the first graphite work where I began to break away from depicting my subject in it's natural environment and began to embrace the beauty of imperfection. Thank goodness I broadened my direction. It ended up being selected for the annual Society of Animal Artists exhibition and it was chosen for the national museum tour, 'Art and the Animal'. and then later sold at the Missoula Art Museum in Montana. I found this beautiful moth in the pool in my backyard. I was immediately struck by how soft and delicate it appeared, yet so powerful in spite of it's tarnished symmetry. It's strength evoked an emotional connection and I could not resist drawing it."
